How they work

How do photochromic lenses work?

The lens contains molecules that react to the sun’s ultraviolet light: they darken when exposed to it and clear again when it goes away.

  1. 01

    Indoors

As clear as regular glasses. Ideal for the office, home or school.

  2. 02

    Cloudy day

They take on a medium tint: even when you can’t see the sun, UV rays pass through clouds.

  3. 03

    Direct sun

They reach their darkest tint and help you see more comfortably in bright light.

What affects the tint
  • Sun intensity. The more UV radiation, the darker they get.
  • Temperature. In the cold they get darker and take a little longer to clear; in the heat, the opposite.
  • The windshield. Inside a car they barely darken, because the glass blocks most UV rays.

Before you choose

Are photochromic lenses right for you?

They’re ideal if…

  • You go in and out a lot during the day and don’t want to switch glasses.
  • You walk, exercise or work outdoors.
  • Bright light bothers you and you also spend hours at screens: they include a blue light filter.
  • You want a single prescription pair instead of separate glasses and sunglasses.

Keep in mind…

  • Inside a car they barely darken, because the windshield blocks most UV rays.
  • Back indoors, they take a few minutes to clear completely.
  • On very hot days they get a little less dark than on cold days.

How much are photochromic glasses at Livor?

With your prescription (single vision) and Standard material they start at $359 USD, and non-prescription at $299 USD. The price includes the frame, photochromic lens, blue light filter, premium anti-reflective coating and UV protection. In Premium material they cost $399 USD and in Elite $569 USD.

Do photochromic lenses darken inside a car?

Very little. The windshield blocks most of the UV rays that activate the lens, so inside a car they stay almost clear.

How long do they take to darken and clear?

They darken within minutes of stepping into the sun and take somewhat longer to clear completely back indoors. Temperature matters: in the cold they get darker and clear more slowly.

Do photochromic lenses have a blue light filter?

Yes. Total protection includes everything in Digital (premium anti-reflective coating, UV protection and a blue light filter) plus the photochromic lens. Learn about the blue light filter.

Can I order them without a prescription?

Yes. On the frame’s page, choose non-prescription lenses and Total protection. In Standard material they cost $299 USD.

Do they replace sunglasses?

For everyday use, going in and out or walking outdoors, they’re very practical. For hours of intense sun, like at the beach or driving, many people also keep a dedicated pair of sunglasses.
